چکیده

Direct numerical simulation (DNS) has become a powerful tool in studying fundamental phenomena of laminar-turbulent transition of high-speed boundary layers. Previous DNS studies of supersonic and hypersonic boundary layer transition have been limited to perfect-gas flow over flat-plate boundary layers without shock waves. For hypersonic boundary layers over realistic blunt bodies, DNS studies of transition need to consider the effects of bow shocks, entropy layers, surface curvature, and finite-rate chemistry. It is necessary that numerical methods for such studies are robust and high-order accurate both in resolving wide ranges of flow time and length scales and in resolving the interaction between the bow shocks and flow disturbance waves. This paper presents a new high-order shock-fitting finite-difference method for the DNS of the stability and transition of hypersonic boundary layers over blunt bodies with strong bow shocks and with (or without) thermo-chemical nonequilibrium. The proposed method includes a set of new upwind high-order finite-difference schemes which are stable and are less dissipative than a straightforward upwind scheme using an upwind-bias grid stencil, a high-order shock-fitting formulation, and third-order semi-implicit Runge–Kutta schemes for temporal discretization of stiff reacting flow equations. The accuracy and stability of the new schemes are validated by numerical experiments of the linear wave equation and nonlinear Navier–Stokes equations. The algorithm is then applied to the DNS of the receptivity of hypersonic boundary layers over a parabolic leading edge to freestream acoustic disturbances. c © 1998 Academic Press

Simulation of Hypersonic Shock Wave/Boundary Layer Interaction Using High Order WENO Scheme

This paper investigates the accuracy and robustness of high order WENO schemes for predicting hypersonic shock wave/boundary layer interaction. The implicit time marching method with unfactored Gauss-Seidel line relaxation is used with a 5th order WENO finite difference scheme for inviscid fluxes. The viscous terms are discretized using a 4th order conservative central differencing. Numerical r...

A High-Order Cut-Cell Method for Numerical Simulation of Hypersonic-Boundary Transition with Arbitrary Surface Roughness

Hypersonic boundary-layer transition can be affected significantly by surface roughness. Many important mechanisms which involve transition induced by arbitrary roughness are not well understood. In this paper, we propose a new high-order cut cell method which combined the non-uniform finite difference method for discrete points near the curvilinear boundary and shock-fitting method for the bow...

High-Order Finite-Di erence Shock-Fitting Schemes for Direct Numerical Simulation of Hypersonic Boundary-Layer Receptivity to Free-Stream Disturbances

Direct numerical simulation of the receptivity of hy-personic boundary-layers to freestream disturbances requires high-order accurate numerical methods to resolve a wide range of time and length scales. Traditional second-order nite diierence schemes do not have an adequate accuracy level for the direct numerical simulation. In addition, hypersonic ow simulation needs to resolve unsteady bow sh...

Numerical Simulation of Shock-Wave/Boundary/Layer Interactions in a Hypersonic Compression Corner Flow

Numerical results are presented for the shock-boundary layer interactions in a hypersonic flow over a sharp leading edge compression corner. In this study, a second- order Godunov type scheme based on solving a Generalized Riemann Problem (GRP) at each cell interface is used to solve thin shear layer approximation of laminar Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations. The calculated flow-field shows general...
